The extension shows “Degraded mode”
This badge means the local ndaact.ai app (which handles advanced model-based detection and PDF redaction) is unreachable from the extension. In degraded mode, text protection stays active via a local regular-expression fallback (email, IBAN, phone numbers, check-digit identifiers) — but without detection of people’s names or organizations, which requires the local model.
What to do: check that the desktop app is running (icon in the menu bar/notification area). If the icon shows a red “!” badge, restart the app. If the detection model is currently downloading (icon with an animated arrow), wait — basic text protection stays active in the meantime via the local fallback.
A PDF upload is blocked
PDF redaction follows a deliberately strict policy: if the local app is unreachable or returns an error, the upload is blocked rather than sending the original document unprotected. This isn’t a bug — it’s the intended behavior, to never let an unredacted file slip through by accident.
What to do: restart the local ndaact.ai app, wait for the icon to return to its normal state, then try the upload again.
How to view the detection history
Click the extension icon, then the tab listing recent detections. You’ll find the type of data detected and its timestamp — the original value is never shown outside your machine.
How to temporarily disable protection
The toggle at the top of the extension popup turns protection on or off for the currently open site. This only affects the browser-side extension; on the clipboard side, suspension works separately and stays temporary (30 minutes), never a full permanent disable — full clipboard management happens in the desktop app.
How to sign in or switch accounts
Sign-in and license management happen in the desktop app, not the extension. If the extension popup shows you’re not signed in, use the button that opens the sign-in flow in the app.
How to uninstall
Extension: remove it from your browser’s extensions page (chrome://extensions). All data stored locally by the extension (chrome.storage) is deleted with it.
Desktop app — macOS: delete the app from Finder. Windows: uninstall via “Add or remove programs”.
